Last night marked baseball — the way it oughta be.
Players who do it for the love of the game — not the next paycheck. We attended the first of a four-game series between the Birmingham Barons and the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx at Jackson’s Pringles Park.
The game didn’t get off to a great start. Jaxx’ starting pitcher Wilton Chavez loaded the bases on three straight walks to start the game. “Hey,” I said, “look at it this way. He’s working on a no-hitter.”
But, as I often said during the NASCAR days of the radio show, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Jaxx beat the Barons 5-4.
Doug’s Place Flashback: If the team name “Birmingham Barons” sounds familiar, here’s why. Michael Jordan played his minor league ball with the team in between stints with Da Bulls.
Today, I spend my last full day in Jackson doing a little shopping. Tomorrow, church and then Mom and I go down to Alabama to visit Grandma. I head for home Monday.
