Robert Urich — 1946-2002

When I woke up this morning at 2:00, an internet friend in California gave me a URL of a webpage noting Robert Urich was in grave condition.

My reaction… WHAT?? No way.

Robert was just here in south Mississippi last year as the keynote speaker of the Women’s Life Conference. As the name of the event implies, I wasn’t permitted to attend. But, I heard nothing but great response to Robert’s appearance.

He said at that conference he defeated cancer. And he shared his message of survival with the attendees of the confernce.

As far as his work on screen, my memories of Vega$ are fuzzy at best. But Spenser: For Hire has to be one of the best crime-fighting series I’ve ever seen. One that deserved a longer run (three seasons, by my count).

Great stories, lots of action and two great actors in Robert Urich and Avery Brooks. On one of my days off, I was pleasantly surprised to find a Spenser rerun on The WB cable channel, offered to cable systems in cities that do not have a WB broadcast affiliated station.

One of our great actors and great persons has left us too soon.
